A VW Grand California 600 at a Tenerife viewpoint above the clouds: this is how varied the island gets in a single route.

You are planning your trip to Tenerife and the question keeps coming back: campervan or motorhome? Both give you a bed, a kitchen and the freedom to go where you like. But on an island of mountain roads, tight villages and steep climbs, the choice shapes the whole trip.

This guide is for you if you are hiring for the first time and want to decide with confidence. We explain what each option is, how it behaves in Tenerife, when a motorhome makes sense and why a campervan suits most travellers.

What Is the Difference?

Campervan. A vehicle similar in size to a large people carrier, fitted out as a home on wheels. It has a bed, a kitchen and storage in a compact space, and it drives much like a big car. The VW California 6.1 Ocean is the most compact model in our fleet.

Motorhome. A larger and taller vehicle built to give you more living space and, usually, more separate areas. The trade-off is that it takes up more room and needs more attention on narrow roads and when parking. In our fleet, the VW Grand California 600 and the VW KNAUS Vans (Wave 640 MEG and TI Plus 700 LF Platinum) belong in this group, with more space and a full bathroom.

Why the Choice Matters So Much in Tenerife

Tenerife is not an island of straight lines. Within a few hours you go from the coast to the pine forest, climb towards the Teide and drop into mountain villages. That variety is what makes the trip special, and it is also why vehicle size is something you notice.

Mountain roads. The climb to the Teide and the routes through Anaga Rural Park have constant bends and changes in height. In a more compact vehicle you drive with less stress and enjoy the scenery more. Some roads on the island, such as the one to Masca, are narrow, so check conditions before you set off and choose a vehicle you feel comfortable with.

Parking. In the south and around beach areas such as El Médano there is more room, but in the north the villages have tighter streets. In towns like Santa Cruz or La Laguna, a smaller vehicle saves you a lot of circling.

Short distances. From the area around Tenerife South Airport you can reach almost anywhere on the island in a couple of hours. You do not need a huge vehicle to cover a lot of ground. You need one that lets you stop anywhere interesting without a second thought.

When a Motorhome Makes Sense

Let us be honest: there are trips where a motorhome is the right call.

  • You are travelling with several people and need more room to sleep or to relax inside.

  • You are staying for weeks and value more storage and more separation between areas.

  • You put comfort inside ahead of agility when driving and parking.

If that sounds like you, our fleet has the VW Grand California 600 and the VW KNAUS Vans, with more space and a full bathroom. Just keep in mind that on the narrowest mountain roads, such as those in Anaga, they need more route planning.

When a Campervan Makes Sense

For most trips around Tenerife, a campervan is the most balanced choice:

  • You are travelling as a couple, with friends or as a small family.

  • You want to handle mountain roads, villages and beach areas with ease.

  • You like to change plans on the go and stop wherever you fancy.

  • You want a comfortable trip without the extra effort of driving a large vehicle.

The VW California 6.1 Ocean is a great pick for couples and flexible trips. If you need more space, the VW Grand California 600 or the VW KNAUS Vans are the alternative in our fleet. You can see every model and its details on our premium campervans page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a campervan or a motorhome better for Tenerife? For most travellers, a campervan. It handles mountain roads better, is easier to park and suits almost any route on the island. A motorhome makes sense for larger groups or very long stays.

Is it hard to drive a campervan in Tenerife? No. It drives much like a large car. In mountain areas such as the Teide or Anaga, take your time and respect the bends.

Can you sleep in the campervan anywhere on the island? Not anywhere. Camping rules in Tenerife are stricter than in Fuerteventura, especially in tourist areas and near beaches. There are official campsites, such as Camping Montaña Roja in El Médano and Camping Nauta in Santa Cruz, and the camping areas in Teide National Park, which require a free booking in advance through the Cabildo. When you pick up your campervan we give you local tips on where to stop.

What is included when you hire a campervan in Tenerife? Unlimited mileage, bedding, towels, kitchen equipment, gas and support throughout your trip. Full details are on our Tenerife campervan rental page.

How many days do you need to see the island? With a week you can cover the big highlights: the Teide, Anaga, the south coast and the northwest. If you want ideas, our 7-day Tenerife campervan itinerary is built for exactly that.
